You may be surprised, but when it comes to chairs, furniture, and other products, the phrase “made in North America” or “made in Canada” can be misleading.

Manufactured in Canada

If you purchase chairs or furniture that is marketed as being made in Canada, this means that the chairs are physically built within the Canadian provinces. Some parts may be sourced from other countries, but the term “Made in Canada” is reserved for products that are genuinely built in Canada. If you come across a product that is deceptively advertised as “Made in Canada” or “Manufactured in Canada,” and you feel this is incorrect, you can report it. (Learn how below.)

Made in Canada

Many companies that manufacture furniture or other products in Canada may use the term “Made in Canada.” Many of our articles use this term simply because it’s what most people are searching for. However, some companies may stretch the meaning of this to include products that are at least halfway made in Canada from foreign parts but are shipped to a Canadian warehouse for packaging and sales. While this extension of the term does benefit Canadian businesses and workers somewhat, it isn’t the same thing as saying a product is manufactured in Canada or North America. All Holsag wooden chairs are manufactured in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada, at our manufacturing facility.

Manufactured in North America

This means the chairs are built in a North American factory.
All Holsag wooden chairs are manufactured in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada using wooden frames sourced from FSC® Certified sustainable forests in Eastern Europe. The Holsag factory then assembles the components to fit each chair specification. The chairs are then assembled, finished, and upholstered.

Made in North America

Manufacturers who purchase chairs from overseas, such as China, often claim their products are made in North America. However, only the final chair finishes are done by the company.
Holsag wooden chairs are designed and created by North American employees. (However, Holsag does offer a few faux wood chair options with frames that are manufactured overseas.)

Why it Matters

Quality Control

When a manufacturer builds the chair, the company can do more quality assurance testing. That’s why chairs manufactured in Canada or North America often have a stronger warranty.

Lead Times

Wooden chairs manufactured in Canada or North America have an average lead time of six weeks. Chairs manufactured overseas have an average lead time of 6–12 weeks. That lead time can get even longer depending on the time of year and international challenges, such as major holidays like Chinese New Year that close businesses and factories for up to four weeks.

Price

Chairs manufactured overseas might be less expensive than chairs manufactured in Canada or North America. However, international politics can be a factor. For example, tariffs may cause a price increase.
